About us ...

The Museum of Sex opened its doors in New York City in October 2002. It was - and remains - without precedent in the museum world. The museum is committed to creating an open discourse surrounding sex as well as striving to present the best in current scholarship about human sexuality unhindered by self-censorship. The Museum’s permanent collection of over 20,000 artifacts comprises works of art, photography, clothing and costumes, technological inventions and historical ephemera. The Museum preserves this ever-growing library of sexually related objects that would otherwise be destroyed and discarded due to their sexual content.

Since its inception, the Museum has generated over 30 exhibitions and 6 virtual installations. With each new exhibition, lecture series, event and publication, the Museum of Sex is committed to addressing a wide range of topics, while simultaneously highlighting material and artifacts from different continents, cultures, time periods and media. Remaining headquartered in New York - the museum is now expanding to other markets, starting with Miami in 2022.

About this role ...

The Director of Human Resources (HR) is a Senior Staff position within the Museum HQ. The HQ team oversees all Museum of Sex personnel, business and visitor experience activities at all museum locations. The Director works closely with other departments to create the systems, policies, procedures, and training needed to deliver world-class entertainment, museum studies, and an industry-best workplace environment.

About the work (Primary Job Responsibilities) …

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all company HR-related items and act as the lead on all company employee relations issues.
  • Develop strong relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, in order to identify and develop programs and tools needed to enable all staff to perform their jobs effectively and influence a positive and productive workplace.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal employment and labor laws.
  • Work with outside legal counsel on any employment or labor issues in order to minimize organizational risk.
  • Lead the maintenance and effective usage of all HR software solutions.
  • Lead the recruiting and interview processes for employees by drafting/approving job descriptions, posting jobs, screening resumes, responding to candidates, conducting interviews, counseling managers on candidate selection, and serving as the primary point of contact with contracted recruiters and/or staffing agencies.
  • Lead the administrative onboarding process for all staff, working in concert with external partners, and internal managers.
  • Source and administer company-wide HR training programs for harassment, cultural sensitivity, emergency response and other programs as needed.
  • Identify all employee training needs and support the development of training programs and all training materials.
  • Build assessment programs and guide staff evaluation systems.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for company Benefit Administrators and develop, implement and manage employee benefits programs.
  • Evaluate and recommend options for employee remediation or reward.
  • Develop internal leadership training and guide managers in coaching and disciplining employees; hearing and resolving employee grievances; and counseling employees and supervisors.
  • Guide the development of Standard Operating Procedures necessary to properly evaluate employee performance and support team development.
  • Recommend and implement programs and activities to improve and maintain positive employee morale and engagement.
  • Conduct and analyze exit interviews for staff.
  • Develop an annual Human Resources budget and track monthly variances.
  • Supervise HR personnel in all satellite locations for adherence to company standards and effectiveness.
  • Lead other projects and perform other ad hoc related tasks as assigned to help the Museum of Sex team operate effectively.

What you might be like …

  • At least 5 years in upper HR management.
  • Professional Human Resources certification (CP or SCP) is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and clearly in stressful situations and maintain a calm demeanor.
  • Must be a true self-starter and able to execute assignments independently.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Familiar with (and appreciates) industry trends, but also able to customize solutions to specific workplaces.
  • Experience in executive recruitment is a plus.
  • Experience working with entrepreneurs, artists and creative minds is a plus.
  • Experience managing part-time employees at attractions or museums is a plus.
  • Passion for helping to provide teams with the tools they need to succeed.
  • Passion for “staff development” and “building leaders” inside the workplace.
  • Excellent written and presentation skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Fearless, creative problem-solver, and able to exercise sound judgement.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
