Columbia College Chicago a private urban institution of over 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students, four-year College offering a distinctive curriculum that blends liberal arts, creative and media arts and business is currently searching for a Manager of Marketing and Community Engagement for the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MOCP).

The MoCP is the world’s premier college art museum dedicated to photography.  As an international hub, we generate ideas and provoke dialogue among students, artists and diverse communities through groundbreaking exhibitions and programming. Our mission is to cultivate a deeper understanding of the artistic, cultural and political roles of photography in our world today.

Founded in 1976 by Columbia College Chicago as the successor to the Chicago Center for Contemporary Photography, the Museum of Contemporary Photography began collecting in the early 1980s and has since grown its collection to include over 16,500 objects by over 1,500 artists. The MoCP is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive director, the Manager of Marketing and Community Engagement is responsible for overseeing all marketing and public relations efforts of the museum in a way that prioritizes creativity, community participation, and continual analysis/iteration of activities. This job encompasses varied duties including marketing, multi-media storytelling and community engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities

Marketing Duties:

  • Partner with Columbia College Marketing Department to ensure alignment of strategic goals.
  • Propose and enlist support for determined long-term marketing strategies for the Museum as key member of the MoCP strategic planning team.
  • Design and execute all marketing activities for museum exhibitions and programs.
  • Establish policies regarding social media activities for staff members, interns, and volunteers.
  • Approve the creation of promotional material to ensure in-line with the museums mission.
  • Create, execute, and continuously oversee an advertising campaign that drives interest and results in more funding for the museum.
  • Head the official promotion of the Museum's Fine Print Program.
  • Represent the museum’s interest and goals when partnering with the college’s Manager of Development on annual benefit, and other activities.
  • Manage production of the Museum's annual report.

Public Relations Duties:

  • Manage all the museum’s publicity creation, and distribution, to the media.
  • Establish new, and strengthen, existing media outlets {both traditional and informal) relationships to ensure that mission, goals, and stories of the museum are effective and reaching the appropriate target audience.
  • Serve as the lead spokesperson responding to media inquiries and interviews.
  • Develop strategic plan to elicit local business partnerships around events and exhibitions.

Community Engagement Duties:

  • Design, and apply, new forms of community engagement, research based, to invite active participation with the MoCP mission beyond our walls.
  • Develop and execute programs to increase businesses' and individuals' involvement with the museum and its mission.
  • Design roadmap to effectively, and enthusiastically, represent the museum throughout the community
  • Develop, implement, track, and evaluate creative strategies to encourage deeper participation in MoCP programming by new and existing visitors and members.
  • Develop, and implement, creative ideas for partnerships that can expand MoCP's reach and support our partners in the community.
  • Design effective evaluation strategies to assess both the reach of marketing efforts and the impact of MoCP programming.


  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least three years of related experience required.
  • Knowledge of Contemporary Art/Photography a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills; personable and diplomatic in working with diverse constituencies and capable of inspiring participation from partners, media outlets, and community members. Fearless in reaching out to media.
  • Enthusiastic about teamwork. Ability to collaborate well with staff, interns, and volunteers to promote the philosophy and goals of the Museum.
  • Self-driven; able to multitask and lead interns to extend your work. Entrepreneurial, creative, and superb on follow-through.
  • An analytic approach to work, constantly thinking in terms of iteration, testing, measurement, and redirection.
  • Loves working with a variety of social media tools and creative approaches to community engagement both online and out in the world.
  • Comfort working with Photoshop, Illustrator, and video editing tools a plus.
